The Bo-Stevens: Rockin' You To Your Roots

The Bo Stevens

Sometimes when you take the time to take a detour from the "normal" fare offered by local clubs and experience an act that is different and out of your comfort zone you can often find a gem of a performance that takes you by surprise and makes you wonder why it took you so long to find that performer. If you were at Greene Street Club this past Friday night then chances are you left at the end of the night thinking that very thought and not necessarily for the headliner.
Unknown Hinson appeared at the downtown Greensboro nightspot Friday night and played his campy, psychobilly performance to an enthusiastic crowd. Hinson is one of the very best guitarist I've ever seen play but on this night it was the opening act that mesmerized me. Winston-Salem based the Bo-Stevens, a roots/rockabilly quintet took the stage to open up the night and ended up owning the house by the time they turned the stage over to Hinson. This four-man, one woman band featuring Richard Boyd on guitar and lead vocals was an instant hit with a crowd that was about as diverse as possible. Each member of the band provided their own magical touch for the performance - Jeff Shu on pedal steel and electric mandolin, Greg Bell on lead guitar and Doug Hawkins on drums. As good as the guys were, the diminutive and dynamic little lady slapping hard on the standup bass, Billie Feather, was hypnotic. The on-stage chemistry with this group was evident throughout their set which ended all too soon. The bottom line here is that if you have the opportunity to catch the Bo-Stevens live then do it and make the Bo-Stevens a priority on your list of live music acts to see in the Triad.
